In Canada, more than 80% of the population lives in cities. More than half of BC residents call one city home - Metro Vancouver. It's possible to spend one's life entirely within the urban bubble with little appreciation for the forests from which the city was carved out. People rarely encounter the far-flung edges of the urban sprawl where the interface between city and nature lies. In particular, the mountainous terrain of the Lower Mainland lends itself to a stark divide, civilization on one side and pure wilderness on the other. Our relationship with the woods is complicated. It can feel idyllic and comforting, savage and menacing. Where is our natural place on this earth? And must we pick a side?
