Having grown up in south Burnaby all my life, Metrotown as a working-class neighborhood anchors my mental geography and identity. Its existence through the years has always been an odd mishmash of car-oriented megamalls, rapid transit, single-family homes, low-rise and high-rise apartments. More recently, luxury condos have entered into the mix, usually by the demolition of existing low-income housing. The difference in urban massing of the old and new is jarring. Storefronts cater to higher-end and often Chinese clientele. Luxury cars ply the streets. A simmering tension lingers in the air. This series is a documentation of the area in its state of flux, both to belatedly memorialize the neighborhood I once knew and to capture my uneasy curiosity at what the future holds.
