In the Trump era, objective truth is rapidly disappearing from the political culture of the United States. Despite the president's many moral transgressions, a significant subset of Americans believes in his blatant denial of facts despite incontrovertible evidence to the contrary. In the face of this new (un)reality, I feel lost, untethered to the truths I rely on as anchors to help navigate the world. I mimic this sense of dislocation by erasing local landmarks from Vancouver scenes. They aren't erased skillfully with Photoshop but instead crudely blocked out; it seems like that's all that's required to believe in lies these days. These disappeared minor landmarks can readily be identified by Vancouverites, but they are not Eiffel Towers or Taj Mahals. Only those familiar with the city will understand that a reality has been lost. To the rest, what has been lost may as well have never existed.
